What makes a news story "JLPT N3 level"?

N3 is the bridge between textbook Japanese and native text. Yominews N3 stories use the connective grammar and more abstract vocabulary typical of the level, keep sentences a notch shorter than native news, and add furigana above every kanji so you can keep reading instead of stopping to look up readings.

Can I read the same story at an easier or harder level than N3?

Yes. Every Yominews story is one page carrying all of its published JLPT levels. Open any article and switch levels with the tabs at the top; the story stays the same, only the Japanese adapts.

Is Yominews free? Do I need an account?

How often is new N3 content published?
